The 48JZ combines the electric cooling and heating of a heat pump with the comfort of a gas furnace for harsher conditions. Heat pump systems are excellent for energy-efficient, year-round comfort, but typically rely on an electric auxiliary heat source when the outdoor temperature gets really cold. By using the heat pump as the heating source for cool weather and switching to the gas furnace as the temperature drops, a dual fuel system can take advantage of the efficiencies offered by each system. ratings of 12 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) and electric heating up to 7.2 HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor), the 48JZ easily provides better economy than older heat pump models and many new ones as well. Probably the single most important factor in that economy is the scroll compressor which is designed specifically for use with Puron refrigerant. During the colder months when gas heating takes over, Carrier's 48JZ operates at up to 81.1% AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency). The Turbo-Tubular^TM heat exchanger helps achieve that heating efficiency by allowing hot gases to make multiple passes across the path of the indoor air.
